The next morning Sidney picked up cell phone and dialed Glen’s number.

“Hello?” Glen said, half awake and half hung-over.

“Hello, Glen, this is Sidney,” he said sweetly. “Were you still a sleep?”

“Yeah,” Glen muttered. “What time is it?

Sidney looked at the digital clock on the table next to his bed.

“It’s eight-thirty,” he chirped.

“Jesus Christ, Sidney,” Glen barked. “What’s your problem?”

“I’ve something important to ask you.”

“What?” Glen said, wanting to go back to bed to sleep off his painful hangover.

“Did you tell Joe last night that I was only interested in having a sexual fling with him?”

“I may have alluded to the fact that you have a thing for bears.”

Sidney felt himself getting angry.

“My interest in Joe is more than a casual fling. He’s my boyfriend,” he said harshly.

“Good God, you’re joking, right?”

“What is your problem with Joe?”

“I’ve no problem with Joe,” Glen insisted. “If you want to date beneath you, then that’s your choice.”

“That’s right. It is my choice who I date, and I choose to date that kind-hearted man.” Sidney thought for a moment then continued. “If I didn’t know better I’d think you were jealous of Joe.”

Glen began laughing to mask his true feelings.

“Yeah, right, I’m jealous of a down-on-his-luck, homeless guy with a not so intelligent child.”

Sidney’s blood began to boil. He wanted to yell every profanity he could think of at his so-called friend, but he refrained. He looked at the fire alarm on the wall. He had an idea.

“I would like to say something important to you, but you need to listen very carefully.”

“What is it?”

“Just give me a moment.”

Sidney got out of bed and walked up to where the fire alarm was mounted. He grabbed a nearby chair and placed it just under the fire alarm. He stepped on the chair so that he was eye-level with the alarm.

“Hello, Sidney?”

“I’m here,” Sidney responded. “Please listen carefully.”

“Okay,” Glen said, half sleep.

Sidney placed his cell phone directly in front of the fire alarm. He reached up with his other hand and pressed the testing button. Within seconds the room was filled with the piercing loud sound.

“What the fuck?” Glen screamed, horrified as the sound of the alarm nearly made him fall out of bed. “You bitch!”

Sidney hung up his cell phone, smiling as he got down from the chair.
